Chapter Ten
Sid
I stepped up beside Ian and listened as he spoke to Justin Duchampâs parents.
âMr. Duchamp, I understand youâre upset and worried about your son, but threats and recriminations are not going to help me find him. Please, take a moment to calm yourself so we can both work towards finding Justin,â Ian said.
He was so calm. I really could learn a lot from him. I watched how upset Mrs. Duchamp was and decided she needed water. It was a good way to get people to calm and center, so I went into the main hall and found the refreshment table and grabbed two bottles of water. By the time I got back, Ian had managed to get both parents to sit outside one of the offices and I joined him to silently hand each parent a bottle of water.
Ian nodded his gratitude to me and Mrs. Duchamp sniffled her thanks. I watched as she drank some of the water and let out a breath. She might be able to hold a conversation soon after all. Yeah, I know, Iâm being an asshole. She just had her son stolen and all that. I guess I just didnât get all twisted up about stuff like normal people. Growing up in a family full of cops, you learned stoicism early. It didnât mean we werenât emotional or loving or easy to anger â it just meant that stuff that other people would fall apart over, we didnât until later. When we were alone. In our bedrooms. Behind closed doors. Maybe.
I listened to Sinâs little group for a few minutes, then turned to the Duchampâs and interrupted Ian.
âWhy didnât you put down on Justinâs school forms that he has fae blood in his bloodline?â
A muscle in Ianâs jaw twitched and both of Justinâs parents gasped.
âWe are not fae. There is no fae blood in our bloodline,â Mr. Duchamp said. âThatâs insulting.â
I simply quirked a brow and turned to Mrs. Duchamp. âWhy donât you come with me? We can get a damp cloth for your face and give you a moment to pull yourself together. Weâll need you a little calmer if weâre going to be able to speak to you about Justin.â
The woman actually looked at her husband as if asking permission â and when he nodded, she rose to her feet. Please, shoot me if I ever got that submissive. Ever. Please.
I smiled at Ian and Mr. Duchamp, and led the missus to the ladies room. I leaned against the door while she washed her face and touched up her lipstick. âI think Iâm okay to answer questions now.â
âGood,â I said. âSo, I take it your husband doesnât know about Finn and the child he got on you?â
She clutched the edge of the sink and turned to look at me, mouth gaping wide. âHowâ¦I didnâtâ¦itâs notâ¦â Then her mouth closed with a snap. âItâs Jackâs son, thereâs no way it could be anyone elseâs.â
âExcept Justin has fae magic and you know it and have kept it hidden from your husband.
